October 2, FEMA & FCC Emergency Test 10/4

Dear Oxford Families and Staff,

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and theFCC(Federal Communications Commission) have asked us to communicate that on October 4, 2023 beginning at approximately 2:20 pm they will be conducting a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts(WEA) and theEmergency Alert System(EAS).

The WEA portion of the test will text “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”  An alarm will sound on all mobile phones regardless of the phone’s volume setting- even if the phone is on mute the alert will sound on it.

The EAS portion of the test will be conducted on television and radio stations and will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages that have occurred for many years that the public is familiar.

The purpose of these test is to ensure the systems continue to be an effective method of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on a national level. Further details on the tests can be found in a press release on the FEMA website.

Sincerely,
Oxford Community Schools
