October 4, FEMA & FCC Emergency Test Today

Dear Oxford Families and Staff,

This is a reminder that the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) today on October 4, 2023 beginning at approximately 2:20 pm will be conducting a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The WEA portion of the test will text “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”  An alarm will sound on all mobile phones regardless of the phone’s volume setting- even if the phone is on mute the alert will sound on it.

The purpose of these test is to ensure the systems continue to be an effective method of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on a national level. Further details on the tests can be found in a press release on the FEMA website.
