October 3, Tailgating Rules & Expectations

Dear Oxford Schools Community,

As we get ready to cheer on our students at Wildcat Stadium once again on Friday, it is necessary to reiterate the regulations while on school property.

No alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or weapons are allowed on any school campuses per Michigan law and Federal law in the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Act.

This past Homecoming weekend we experienced numerous adults possessing and consuming alcoholic beverages while tailgating in the Oxford High School parking lot prior to the game. This led to inappropriate and disgraceful behavior by a group of adults toward the visiting team by booing and yelling at them as they arrived. This behavior is certainly not the behavior we want our guests to experience nor our students to witness or emulate.

We understand that tailgating is an Oxford tradition and we do not want to ruin it for the families that enjoy it as a non-alcoholic, respectful, and fun family event.  However, to keep our students, families, and guests safe and our environment welcoming and appropriate, the following rules apply to all future home football games, and any other games where tailgating occurs:

  • Additional police presence will be on our grounds prior to and during all future football games. Anyone found with alcohol on school grounds will be ticketed by law enforcement (fines begin at $250), the alcohol will be confiscated, and if disruptive behavior warrants, violators may be asked to leave the premises. Repeat offenders may be suspended from attending school events.
  • Tailgating may begin after 4:30 pm when most student activities have ended for the day.  Cars will not be allowed to set up for tailgating prior to that time.  The lots will be monitored by security and police.
  • Tents and RVs used for tailgating prior to home games are prohibited. There is not adequate space in our lots to accommodate tents and RVs as well as all of our students', families', and visitors’ vehicles safely.

It is our hope that all patrons will return to celebrating our student events in an appropriate manner.  Families can have fun, enjoy our school events, and are welcome on our properties, however, orderly and lawful behavior is the expectation and requirement.

Go Wildcats!
